Mentally unstable man detained after holding 20 children hostage in Mumbai

A tense standoff in Mumbai’s Powai area ended safely after police rescued over 20 children held hostage by a man identified as Rohit Arya, who threatened to set the place on fire.

A tense situation gripped Mumbai’s Powai area on Thursday when a man, identified as Rohit Arya, took more than 20 children hostage inside a residential flat and threatened to “set everything on fire.”

Police said Arya released a video in which he issued threats and demanded to speak with certain individuals. He also warned that he would harm himself and the children if his demands were not met. The alarming video quickly went viral, prompting an immediate police response.

According to a statement by Mumbai Police, the accused appeared “mentally unstable.” A large team of officers was deployed to the spot, where they carefully negotiated to ensure the children’s safety. After hours of tension, police successfully rescued all the children and detained Arya without any reported injuries.

“All children have been safely rescued from the spot. The accused has been detained by police,” officials confirmed.

Authorities are now questioning Rohit Arya to determine the motive behind his actions. “The police are speaking to him to find out why he took such a step and whether he is mentally unstable,” the statement added.
