NHAI to scrap KYV for cars in FASTag issuance from Feb 2026; banks must validate via VAHAN/RC before activation, ensuring hassle-free travel

In a major reform aimed at easing highway travel, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that it will discontinue the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for cars when issuing new FASTags from February 1, 2026. The move is expected to significantly reduce inconvenience for lakhs of road users who previously  faced delays and post-activation hassles despite having valid vehicle documents.

Under the new framework, KYV will no longer be a routine requirement for existing FASTags issued to cars. It will only be mandated in specific cases where complaints arise, such as loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or suspected misuse. In the absence of such complaints, no KYV will be required, thereby streamlining the process for current users.

Stronger Pre-Activation Safeguards

To ensure accuracy and compliance while simplifying the system, NHAI has introduced stricter pre-activation validation norms for Issuer Banks:

• VAHAN-based validation mandatory: FASTag activation will only be permitted after vehicle details are verified through the VAHAN database.

• No post-activation checks: The earlier provision allowing validation after activation has been scrapped.

• RC-based validation in rare cases: If vehicle details are unavailable on VAHAN, Issuer Banks must validate using the Registration Certificate (RC) before activation, with full accountability.

• Online FASTags included: FASTags purchased through online channels will also undergo complete validation before activation.

These measures shift the responsibility of verification entirely to Issuer Banks prior to activation, ensuring that customers are not burdened with repeated follow-ups.

NHAI said the reforms reflect its commitment to making the FASTag ecosystem more citizen-friendly, transparent, and technology-driven. By eliminating post-issuance KYV requirements and strengthening upfront safeguards, the authority aims to deliver a hassle-free experience for highway users while reducing grievances and enhancing compliance.
