A tragic stampede broke out at Tamil actor Vijay’s TVK rally in Karur district, leaving 39 dead and over 50 injured as the crowd surged uncontrollably.
What was meant to be a show of strength for Tamil star-turned-politician Vijay’s fledgling political outfit, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), turned into a day of mourning after a stampede claimed 39 lives and injured over 50 others.
The incident occurred yesterday evening in Karur district, where an estimated 30,000 supporters gathered for the rally. Vijay, who arrived nearly six hours late, was the central attraction. The crowd, eager to catch a glimpse of the actor, reportedly surged forward, breaking police barricades and creating panic.

Police, who were clearly overwhelmed by the turnout, failed to regulate the movement of people as the swelling crowd pressed towards the stage. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaotic pushing, collapsing barricades, and people trampled underfoot.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with officials confirming that the death toll could rise further as several remain critical.
