Tragedy strikes in Chennai as 9 workers die in building collapse; PM Modi announces relief

A devastating incident at a construction site near the Ennore Thermal Power Plant in Thiruvallur district has claimed the lives of nine workers, all hailing from Assam. The tragedy unfolded when a building under construction suddenly collapsed, trapping several workers. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation by local police.

The deceased workers have been identified as Munna Kemparai, Sorbojit Thousen, Phibit Phanglu, Bidayum Porbosa, Paban Sorong, Prayanto Sorong, Suman Kharikap, Dimaraj Thousen, and Deepak Raijang. Four workers were confirmed dead at the scene, while five others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Authorities are concerned for the critical condition of some individuals still undergoing treatment.

PM Modi expresses deep condolences

In a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, PM Modi expressed deep condolences and announced relief efforts for the victims' families. A compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to each family under the PMNRF, while Rs 50,000 will be given to those injured in the building collapse incident.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also extended his sympathies, revealing that four of the deceased workers were from Karbi Anglong district, and five were from Hojai district. He assured that talks would be initiated with Tamil Nadu authorities to facilitate the return of the bodies to Assam.
