Karur, Tamil Nadu, was gripped by grief yesterday after a devastating stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s political rally claimed 39 lives and injured more than 50. The tragedy, which unfolded amid a massive crowd waiting for hours, has triggered shockwaves across the state and beyond.

Vijay, who had initially faced criticism for leaving silently for Trichy post-event, broke his silence late last night. Taking to X, he said, “My heart is broken. I am in unbearable pain and sorrow that cannot be described. My deepest condolences to the families of our beloved brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur.”

Condolences poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “deeply saddening,” while Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister H.D.
