Advertising agency Schbang came up with an apology over the reaction to the misinformation regarding Ponnam Pandey’s death being used to spread awareness about cervical cancer. “Yes, we were involved in the initiative for Poonam Pandey to spread awareness about Cervical Cancer in collaboration with Hauterfly. To start off, we would like to extend a heartfelt apology – especially towards those who have been triggered as a result of having faced/having a loved one face the hardships of any kind of Cancer. Our actions were driven by a singular mission – to elevate awareness about Cervical Cancer. This act by Poonam has now resulted in making ‘Cervical Cancer’ and its related terms the most searched topic(s) on Google. This is the first time in the history of this country that the word ‘Cervical Cancer’ has been on 1000+ headlines.  Many of you may be unaware but Poonam’s own mother has bravely battled Cancer,” the agency’s statement mentioned. 

However netizens did not feel this was heartfelt or introspective but rather another promotional tactic.  “You had one chance to redeem yourself with the apology, and all you could do was put screenshots and numbers. Really? Trying to prove what? That there are other stupid people around? It’s not even about perspective. Do you even know how marketing and advertising work in the healthcare sector? How one needs to be really sensitive while talking about diseases and conditions? How care & hope should always be the first line of communication and not death! This was such a sick move,” a user on LinkedIn stated.
