In a bid to alleviate severe traffic congestion on Bengaluru’s Ballari Road, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to implement a series of infrastructure upgrades, including underpasses at critical junctions. The project aims to streamline traffic flow on the highway leading to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).
Proposed upgrades focus on constructing underpasses at Kodigehalli, Byatarayanapura, Jakkur, and Allalasandra junctions. These efforts are expected to eliminate traffic signals and provide a smoother commute, particularly for airport-bound travelers. Additionally, service roads impacted by the ongoing Blue Line Metro work will be restored, addressing major bottlenecks.
Highlighting the challenges of the project, NHAI Project Director KB Jayakumar reportedly noted that limited land availability and existing elevated corridor pillars complicate the construction process. Despite these hurdles, specific initiatives are already in the pipeline:
- IAF Yelahanka Station Underpass: A 750-meter underpass using the cut-and-cover method to benefit airport commuters.
- Sadahalli Underpass: Aimed at reducing congestion near the toll gate.
- Public Amenities: Plans include EV charging stations at Hebbal, new bus bays, and improved commuter facilities.
The NHAI has also committed to addressing accident-prone zones, such as the stretch near Café Coffee Day in Yelahanka, following a directive from Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda.
These proposed developments aim to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve overall travel convenience on this vital route.
