Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced plans to introduce a new law requiring vehicle horns to use sounds derived from traditional Indian musical instruments. Speaking at a recent event, he said that instruments such as the flute, table, violin and harmonium could replace the current harsh and unpleasant horn sounds, aiming to make roads more aurally pleasant.
Beyond noise pollution, Gadkari emphasized the environmental impact of the transport sector, which he said contributes to 40% of India’s air pollution. To address this, the government is actively encouraging the use of alternative fuels such as methanol and ethanol. These eco-friendly fuels are seen as a key step in reducing the sector’s carbon footprint and moving towards sustainable mobility solutions.
Gadkari also praised the rapid growth of India’s automobile industry, revealing that its market value has increased from Rs 14 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 22 lakh crore today. He noted that India has now surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest automobile market, after the United States and China.
