Online petition to save 91 Bengaluru lakes

Petition aims to revive these crucial water sources

Petition presses need for inclusive plans for restoration of lakes

With several lakes in a critical state, demanding immediate attention, concerned individuals have taken the initiative to launch an online petition.

The petition aims to revive these crucial water sources, ensure a secure future and emphasizes the pressing need for inclusive plans for the restoration and revitalization of all 91 lakes within the city of Bengaluru.

This initiative is a joint venture between Jhatkaa.org and the Namma Bengaluru Foundation.

It brings attention to various grievances from residents throughout the city who have encountered discoloured or odorous water from bore wells, indicating the disturbing seepage of sewage and chemical contaminants into the groundwater.

A thorough investigation carried out by the Environmental Management & Policy Research Institute (EMPRI) exposed that approximately 85% of Bengaluru’s water bodies are polluted by industrial effluents, sewage, and reckless disposal of solid waste.

Vinod Jacob from Namma Bengaluru Foundation said, “The lakes are the most neglected water bodies in Namma Bengaluru. Since 2017, no factory has been penalised for polluting the lakes. We have a good network of lakes, and if the rajakaluves can be connected, we will be able to solve two issues, the depleting water table in the city and the city’s flooding during monsoons. BWSSB, BBMP lakes and KSPCB have to join hands to make this change and protect our lakes and stormwater drains.” as quoted by Bangalore Mirror.
