Every day, approximately 3 lakh individuals in Bengaluru use electric buses.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) introduced these environmentally friendly buses in the city a year and a half ago as part of their commitment to promoting “green and sustainable mobility.” Despite some initial challenges, BMTC reports that the new services are now attracting more passengers than ever.

On average, 390 electric buses operate in the city, carrying 300,000 daily commuters. These electric buses enjoy 5-10% higher patronage compared to other regular bus services in the city.

BMTC initiated its first electric bus service in December 2021 using funds from the Bengaluru Smart City Project, introducing 90 buses.

In August 2022, an additional 300 electric buses were introduced under the FAME-2 scheme. These buses operate on 18 routes and provide connectivity to various Metro stations.

Introducing electric buses presented an initial challenge due to the evolving nature of electric vehicle technology.

BMTC adopted the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model with private operators for the first time. Under this model, BMTC pays the agreed operational cost to the operator, who utilizes subsidies, employs drivers, and covers maintenance expenses during the lease period.

For 9-meter buses introduced under the Smart City Project, BMTC pays an operational cost of Rs 51 per kilometer, while for 12-meter buses operated under FAME 2, the cost is Rs 48 per kilometer.

Looking ahead, the corporation plans to add 921 more electric buses under the Center’s FAME II scheme. These low-floor, 12-meter buses will each have a seating capacity for 35 passengers.

Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy emphasizes that diesel buses will be gradually phased out, reducing pollution and providing comfortable travel for Bengaluru residents.

Once these new 921 vehicles are introduced, BMTC’s electric bus fleet will reach a total of 1,311 buses.
