Pavan Davuluri, an alumnus of IIT Madras, has been named as the new head of Microsoft Windows and Surface, succeeding Panos Panay, who departed last year to join Amazon. Microsoft’s decision to split the Windows and Surface divisions under separate leadership is noteworthy. Previously overseeing Surface silicone work, Davuluri now assumes responsibility for both departments due to Mikhail Parakhin’s desire to explore new opportunities.

As per reports, Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s head of experience and devices, announced the organizational change in an internal memo, “We are merging the Windows Experiences and Windows + Devices teams under Pavan Davuluri’s leadership.”

This strategic move aims to develop a comprehensive approach to building systems, experiences, and devices across Windows client and cloud services in the AI era. Jha further added that Shilpa Ranganathan and Jeff Johnson, along with their respective teams, will report directly to Davuluri.

Davuluri’s Indian roots

Davuluri’s Indian roots, having graduated from IIT Madras, place him among the ranks of other Indian leaders in prominent tech companies in the US, including Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella.

With over 23 years of experience at Microsoft, Davuluri’s journey began after completing his MS from the University of Maryland, where he joined as the Reliability Component Manager.

In the same memo, Jha informed the team about further organizational changes within the Windows and Web Experiences (WWE) team following the establishment of the Microsoft AI organization. Mikhail Parakhin will transition to explore new roles under Kevin Scott’s supervision.

The amalgamation of Windows Experiences and Windows + Devices into the Experiences + Devices (E+D) division, led by Pavan Davuluri, aims to pioneer holistic development in systems, experiences, and devices for the AI era, indicating Microsoft’s strategic vision for the future.
