A million prayers were answered as Satwik, a 2-year-old, who had fallen into an open borewell in Karnataka’s Vijayapura was rescued alive.

Personnel of the NDRF and SDRF worked assiduously, endangering their own lives and rescued the toddler, who was stuck at 16 feet of the borewell.

This afternoon, when the boy was released from the confines of the borewell, everyone heaved a sigh of relief! The boy was reunited with his mother.

Immediately after his rescue, he was taken to a government hospital and was administered primary care. The boy fell into the borewell at 6pm on April 3 while he was playing. As per eyewitnesses, the borewell was left open and there was no clue that it was sitting with its mouth agape, swallowing anyone who fell into it.

As soon as the news spread about the accident, the personnel from different rescue teams rushed to the spot and made sure that they supplied oxygen incessantly to the child.

With the help of earth movers, they dug a path in order to reach the child.

In fact, MB Patil, who is the Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries M B Patil, who is in charge of Vijayapura, had directed the district administration to expedite measures to rescue the toddler.

He put out a post on X, saying, “I am being apprised of minute-to-minute updates from the district administration.”

The child is a native of Lachyan village.

Indeed, all’s well that ends well!

Now, at this point, we have to tell you what the top court said with respect to such accidents. You may be surprised to know that the top court had taken suo moto cognisance of such borewell mishaps way back in 2010 itself.

After hearing, it had even issued relevant guidelines. It included setting up barbed wire fencing around the well during construction, using a steel plate cover fixed with bolts over the well assembly and filling up of borewells from the bottom to the ground level among others.

The top court had also instructed authorities concerned to give wide publicity to the orders. At the same time, it had also sought an audit of open borewells in different villages.

In fact, even in 2020, the top court again consented to hear the case as the accidents did not stop.

Now, in 2024, the same irregularities and irresponsibilities continue. The borewells are not closed.

Can’t we, as a nation, who boast of landing on the moon, take steps so that our innocent children don’t land up in the abyss of such borewells?
