The historic ICC Men's T20 World Cup has reached a crucial stage as India and England prepare to face off in the second semi-final at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium. The match carries both history and high stakes.

This is the third time the two teams are meeting in a T20 World Cup semi-final. So far, both sides have won one match each, making the head-to-head record 1-1 in knockout clashes of this tournament.

What makes this contest even more special is the venue. After a gap of 39 years, India and England are once again playing a World Cup semi-final at Wankhede. The last time this happened was during the Reliance World Cup, which was the 1987 ODI World Cup.

In that 1987 semi-final, Kapil Dev-led defending champions India took on England in Mumbai. England, batting first, posted 254 runs, powered by a century from Graham Gooch. Chasing 255, India were bowled out for 219 and lost by 35 runs, a defeat that left millions of Indian fans heartbroken.

In T20 World Cup history, the first semi-final meeting between the two sides came in 2022 at Adelaide Oval. India had set a target of 169 runs. However, England chased it down without losing a single wicket, as Jos Buttler and Alex Hales guided their team to a dominant 10-wicket victory.

India responded strongly in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final at Providence Stadium in Georgetown. Led by a half-century from Rohit Sharma, India scored 171 runs. Bowlers Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel picked up three wickets each, restricting England to just 103. India won by 68 runs and advanced to the final.

Now, in 2026, the rivalry resumes once more at Wankhede. The pitch is expected to support batting, raising hopes of a high-scoring contest. The winner of this semi-final will travel to Ahmedabad to face New Zealand in Sunday’s final.

All eyes are now on whether India can rewrite history at Wankhede or if England will once again rise to the occasion.
