After years of backing experience, Chennai Super Kings have reworked their core, investing heavily in young talent at the mini auction to build a fearless, future-ready squad.
Once famously known as “Daddy’s Army,” Chennai Super Kings have officially turned the page. The tag, which followed CSK since their 2018 comeback season after a two-year ban, no longer fits the franchise’s new identity. Back then, the team relied heavily on experienced players, many of them past 30, and the nickname stuck. Now, ahead of the upcoming IPL season, CSK have clearly moved away from that image.
After a disappointing performance last season, the franchise decided it was time for change. Senior players were shown the door, and the focus shifted firmly towards youth. The mini auction became the turning point, with CSK aggressively targeting young cricketers and reshaping the squad into a youthful unit.

Eighteen-year-old Ayush Mhatre is one of the biggest talking points. Despite limited chances last season, he made a strong impression on the big stage. His consistent run-scoring in domestic cricket after the IPL has strengthened his case, and he is now widely expected to be CSK’s regular opener next season.
Another major investment is Karthik Sharma, just 19, who stunned many at the mini auction. CSK spent a massive ₹14.20 crore on him, backing his explosive domestic T20 record. In just 12 T20 matches, he scored 334 runs at a strike rate of 162.93. His List A average of 55.63 and first-class average of 43.55 underline his potential across formats.
CSK also went big on Prashant Veer, a 20-year-old all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh, paying ₹14.20 crore. A left-handed batter and left-arm spinner, Veer was outstanding in the UP T20 League, scoring 320 runs in 10 matches and picking up 10 wickets.

Spin strength has been boosted by Noor Ahmad, the 20-year-old Afghan sensation. Already a proven name in franchise cricket, Noor has represented 22 teams worldwide. His skillset makes him a perfect fit for Chennai’s spin-friendly Chepauk surface.
Completing the young core is Dewald Brevis, 22, known as “Baby AB.” After impressing as a mid-season replacement last year, CSK quickly retained him. His aggressive batting adds firepower to the middle order.
