Strong Indian record at Wankhede, past World Cup rivalry and key player stats set the stage for a thrilling March 5 clash
The T20 World Cup 2026 has reached its decisive stage, with India set to take on England in a high-voltage semi-final on March 5 at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium. Both teams will put their full strength on display as they battle for a place in the final.
Wankhede has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Team India in the T20 format. Out of seven T20 matches played at this venue, India has won five and lost only two. Notably, India had posted a massive total of 247 runs against England at this ground, the highest team score recorded here. India’s biggest victory by runs at Wankhede, a dominant 150-run win, also came against England.
Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India has played two matches at this venue and emerged victorious in both.

In batting records at Wankhede, Virat Kohli leads with 197 runs in three matches, including two half-centuries. The highest individual score belongs to Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 135 runs off just 54 balls against England, hitting 13 sixes in that innings. He also holds the record for most sixes at the venue (13) and the most sixes in a single innings. Abhishek has one century in two matches here.
The highest opening partnership at this ground is 135 runs between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma against West Indies. Players who have been dismissed for zero at this venue include Piyush Chawla, Rishabh Pant, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakravarthy, Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube.
Among bowlers, Mohammed Shami has taken the most wickets at Wankhede in T20s, claiming five wickets in two matches. Shivam Mavi registered the best bowling figures here, taking four wickets for 22 runs in four overs against Sri Lanka.

Historically, India and England have faced each other in a T20 World Cup semi-final before. England defeated India in the 2022 edition. However, India avenged that loss in the 2024 tournament by defeating England and eventually lifting the trophy.
Now in 2026, the rivalry has intensified further. Both teams have won the T20 World Cup twice each. The winner of this semi-final will move one step closer to securing a third title. With Wankhede’s batting-friendly pitch, current player form and the pressure of a knockout clash, an exciting contest is expected.
