Explosive opener yet to fire in T20 World Cup; repeated failures add pressure before England clash
Ahead of the crucial semi-final against England, Team India is facing renewed tension over the form of opener Abhishek Sharma. The young batter, who was projected as a destructive and fearless match-winner before the tournament, has struggled to deliver in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Before the World Cup, Abhishek was described as destructive, deadly, dangerous, explosive, fearless and aggressive, a real game-changer and one of India’s biggest strengths. However, in the mega tournament, the 25-year-old has not lived up to expectations. Instead of being a pillar at the top, he has become a concern for the team management.
His rough patch began from the opening match of the tournament. Abhishek suffered three consecutive ducks in the first three games. He finally opened his account against South Africa but managed only 15 runs in that match.

A brief return to form came against Zimbabwe at Chepauk in Chennai, where he scored 55 runs, his highest score of the tournament. It appeared he had regained rhythm. But in the very next match against West Indies, he was dismissed for just 10 runs, once again disappointing the team.
So far in the tournament, Abhishek has played six matches, scoring only 80 runs at an average of 13.33, including three ducks.
His poor form has directly impacted India’s starts. “Starting trouble” has been a consistent issue for the team from the opening game through the South Africa clash. Even though openers have changed, strong starts have been missing. The only notable first-wicket stand came against Zimbabwe with 48 runs. Against West Indies, the first wicket partnership was just 29 runs, with Abhishek’s struggles being a major factor.

Experts believe pressure may be playing a role. Playing his first major tournament with high expectations from fans and management, the young batter appears burdened. His ultra-aggressive approach, attempting big shots from the first ball, has led to early dismissals. Spin has also troubled him, as he has fallen to spin in three of the six matches.
With semi-final and possibly final pressure set to rise further, all eyes are now on how Abhishek handles expectations in the knockout stage.
