New committee meets CM and DCM in Belagavi to push for stadium revival

The newly elected leadership of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), led by president Venkatesh Prasad along with Vice President Sujith Somasundar, Vinay Mruthyunjaya and other office-bearers, met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar in Belagavi on Wednesday.

The visit was aimed at formally submitting a request to the state government seeking permission to revive M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and allow the venue to resume hosting cricket matches. The delegation emphasised that the stadium’s legacy and reputation must be protected, especially after months of halted cricketing activity.

Cricket at the iconic venue has remained suspended since June 4, the day the RCB victory parade stampede took place in Bengaluru. Following the incident, the Michael Cunha report declared the stadium unsuitable for hosting matches until safety issues were fully addressed. Because of this, several scheduled games, including WPL matches, domestic fixtures and an India Women’s match, were shifted to alternative stadiums.

The new KSCA committee conveyed that restoring Chinnaswamy Stadium is essential not only for cricket but also for Bengaluru’s sporting identity. They expressed their commitment to upgrading safety standards in line with official recommendations.

Their meeting comes shortly after the December 7 KSCA elections, in which the Game Changers panel secured victory. On the same day, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar had publicly assured that IPL matches will not be shifted out of Bengaluru and would continue at Chinnaswamy Stadium, which further strengthens KSCA’s push for timely approval.

The association now awaits the government's decision that will determine when the stadium can officially reopen for major cricket events.
