After a difficult month off the field, India’s vice-captain returns with renewed focus ahead of the Sri Lanka T20I series starting December 21.
India’s star opener Smriti Mandhana has finally stepped back into public view after an emotionally challenging month, one that came right after the high of helping India lift the Women’s World Cup on November 2. Mandhana, now appointed vice-captain for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka starting December 21, attended an event with India captain Harmanpreet Kaur on Wednesday, her first appearance since her wedding was officially called off.

Speaking about her mindset, Mandhana said cricket remains her greatest source of strength.
“Honestly, I don't think I love anything more than cricket,” she said. “When you wear the Indian jersey, nothing else matters. All your personal issues take a backseat because you’re playing for the country and carrying the responsibility of representing over two billion people.”
Mandhana also addressed team dynamics and the importance of open discussions within the squad. She clarified that disagreements are never viewed as problems but as essential exchanges that help the team grow.

“If we don’t have those discussions or arguments, it means we aren’t passionate enough,” she said. “Everyone wants India to win, and different opinions are part of that process.”
Her appearance comes just days after she and music composer Palash Muchhal jointly announced that they were calling off their wedding. The two were scheduled to marry on November 23, but the ceremony was postponed after Mandhana’s father, Srinivas, fell ill. On December 7, they publicly stated that the wedding would not go ahead.
Despite the emotional upheaval, Mandhana is now fully focused on her cricketing duties as India prepare for their first bilateral series since the World Cup triumph. Her return brings stability to the squad as they gear up to face Sri Lanka with renewed confidence and leadership.
