T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav shares a strong bond with Udupi's Kaup Marigudi temple, where his captaincy was miraculously predicted
Team India's T20 World Cup-winning captain, Suryakumar Yadav, shares an unbreakable spiritual and familial bond with coastal Karnataka. Affectionately celebrated as Udupi’s son-in-law, Yadav’s monumental cricketing success is closely tied to his deep devotion to the Kaup Hosa Marigudi Amma temple.
The star cricketer’s connection to the region comes through his wife, Devisha Shetty. Originally hailing from the Kaup taluk in the Udupi district, her family is currently settled in Mumbai. Despite their urban base, the couple remains deeply rooted in their cultural heritage and are ardent devotees of the regional deity, having visited the historic shrine twice to seek the goddess's blessings.
Local devotees recently recalled a fascinating incident that many consider a divine miracle of Kaup Mariyamma. On July 9, 2024, the couple visited the temple for a special darshan. During the puja, the temple priest offered them prasad and prophesied that Yadav would soon lead the Indian cricket team. Astonishingly, just nine days later, on July 18, the Board of Control for Cricket in India officially appointed him as the captain of the national T20 squad.
The couple’s spiritual commitment goes far beyond their regular visits. During the recent multi-crore renovation and reconstruction of the new Kaup Marigudi, Yadav and Devisha generously donated a beautifully crafted pillar to support the temple’s newly built architectural structure.

Following his appointment as captain, temple administrators took a special vow, known as a 'Harake Sankalpa', before the goddess, praying for his team to lift the prestigious T20 World Cup. Now that this historic victory has been achieved, the temple management and local devotees are eagerly awaiting the couple's return. To celebrate this divine fulfillment, they have decided to perform a grand 'Tulabhara' ritual—weighing the couple against jaggery and sugar—upon their next arrival in the coastal town.
For the people of Karnataka, their cherished son-in-law’s global sporting triumph on the cricket field serves as a deeply proud testament to the enduring blessings of their beloved local goddess.
