Kohli jumps to No.2 after a dominant series against South Africa, narrowing the gap at the top

Virat Kohli has taken a major step towards the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings, climbing to No.2 after a remarkable performance in India’s 2-1 series win against South Africa. The updated list released on Wednesday shows Kohli narrowing the gap to just eight rating points behind Rohit Sharma.

Kohli’s surge follows a standout run across all three ODIs, where he accumulated 302 runs at an average of 151 and a strike rate of 117.05. His back-to-back centuries in Ranchi and Raipur pushed him past New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran, who now sit at No.3 and No.4 respectively.

Rohit Sharma retained his top spot after scoring 146 runs in the same series, keeping his rating at 781. Shubman Gill remains in the top five, while Babar Azam has slipped to No.6.

The last time Kohli held the No.1 ODI ranking was in March 2021, before Pakistan’s Babar Azam overtook him. With his return to form and another unbeaten 65 in the decider at Visakhapatnam, Kohli has positioned himself within striking distance of reclaiming the crown.
