At just 14, Bihar’s explosive batting prodigy has stunned world cricket with centuries across formats, but ICC age rules are the only barrier delaying his international debut.
Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has emerged as one of the most talked-about young cricketers in world cricket today. With his fearless and explosive batting, the Bihar-born talent has been rewriting records and leaving cricket legends astonished by his consistency and maturity at such a young age.
Vaibhav’s run of centuries has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has scored hundreds in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, the Asia Cup, Youth One-Day cricket and even the IPL. This year alone, he has registered four official centuries in competitive cricket, along with two more in unofficial matches, making him one of the most exciting young batters in the game.

Despite this remarkable run, one question continues to trouble fans across the country, why hasn’t Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his Team India debut yet?
The answer lies not in form or talent, but in age eligibility rules. Vaibhav is currently 14 years and 276 days old. According to ICC regulations introduced in November 2020, a cricketer must be at least 15 years old to play international cricket. As Vaibhav has not yet crossed that age threshold, he remains ineligible for selection, no matter how many runs he scores.
Earlier, players like Pakistan’s Hasan Raza debuted at 14 years and 227 days, but that was before the ICC enforced a minimum age rule. Under the current framework, the regulation applies strictly to Vaibhav.
However, the wait may not be long. Vaibhav will turn 15 on March 27, 2026. From that date onwards, he becomes eligible to play international cricket as per ICC norms. Sources indicate that if he maintains his current form through IPL Season 19, his entry into the Indian national team is almost certain.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has placed the young prodigy under close supervision. The board is actively grooming him as a future superstar, monitoring his development, workload and discipline. Clear rules and guidelines have been put in place to ensure he stays focused and protected from early burnout. His home association, Bihar, is also working closely with the BCCI to support his growth.
For now, Indian cricket fans will have to wait a little longer. But if current signs are anything to go by, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s rise to Team India appears inevitable, and possibly just months away.
