International Cricket Council breaks silence on Pakistan’s refusal to play India, calling it a threat to cricket’s integrity and warning of strict consequences.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finally responded to Pakistan’s decision to boycott the India match in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, warning that such a move could seriously damage the integrity of international cricket.

Pakistan has announced that it will not play the scheduled match against India on February 15, a decision taken by the Pakistan government. Reacting strongly, the ICC said that in a global tournament, all qualified teams are expected to play every scheduled match fairly and equally. Selectively choosing matches is unacceptable, the council stated.

The ICC made it clear that Pakistan’s stand goes against the spirit of competition. Pulling out of a single high-profile match not only undermines the values of the sport but also sets a dangerous precedent for international tournaments.

In its warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the ICC highlighted multiple concerns. It said that refusing to play a match harms cricket’s competitive balance and credibility. The council also cautioned that such a decision could cause long-term damage to Pakistan cricket itself, not just to the global game. Importantly, the ICC expressed displeasure that it has not received any official communication from the PCB, learning about the decision only through media reports.

The consequences could be severe. Under ICC rule 16.10.7, if Pakistan does not play the match, India will be awarded the two points. Pakistan’s Net Run Rate (NRR) will also take a major hit. The match would be treated as if India successfully chased the target within 20 overs, sharply reducing Pakistan’s run rate. This could seriously affect Pakistan’s chances of qualifying for the Super 8 stage.

In the tournament lineup, Pakistan is placed in Group A alongside India, Namibia, Netherlands, and the United States. Pakistan is scheduled to play its opening match against the Netherlands on February 7.

At present, the ICC has urged the PCB to reconsider its decision and resolve the issue through dialogue. However, if Pakistan continues with its boycott plan, the ICC is expected to take strict disciplinary action.
