Initiative aims to effectively monitor and manage the city's stray dog population

In a pioneering initiative, Bengaluru is set to provide unique identification cards, complete with QR code-enabled geotags, to its stray dog population.

These ID cards, securely fastened around the dogs’ necks, will carry vital information, including breed, vaccination and sterilization status, overall health condition, and contact details of their feeders.

The primary objective behind this endeavor is to effectively monitor and manage the city’s stray dog population.

To ensure the durability of these ID cards in harsh weather conditions and against moisture, they will be laminated.

The first phase of this project kicked off on September 30 at the Hebbal veterinary college, where two strays, named Jockey and Pinky, were issued these ID cards. These dogs are currently housed at the Karuna animal shelter.

The QR code on these cards can be easily scanned with a mobile phone, instantly revealing crucial information about the dog’s well-being and location.

This innovative project is a collaborative effort between the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and the state’s husbandry department. It is worth noting that a similar project was previously implemented in Mumbai with resounding success.

Much like humans, stray dogs will now have their unique IDs, ensuring that we have continuous access to vital information concerning their health and welfare round the clock.

This endeavor represents a significant step forward in improving the lives of Bengaluru’s stray dog population.
