An Executive Committee member of the Karnataka Student’s Association named Manoj wrote a letter to CM Siddaramaiah requesting him to increase the monthly stipend for students residing in hostels that come under the Karnataka Social Welfare Department and the Backward Classes Welfare Department. The letter was even brought to the notice of DCM D.K Shivakumar, Social Welfare Minister Dr. H.C Mahadevappa and Minister For Backward Class Development Shivaraj S. Tangadagi. “The monthly allowance for Backward Classes and Minority (BCM) Department hostels is Rs 1750. This comes down to Rs 56 per day. Even prisoners get a daily allowance of Rs 75. This extends to Rs 2300 per month. Prisoners are getting more daily allowance than students. Kindly increase the stipend to Rs 5000 per month,” the letter mentioned.
The letter highlighted that the current amount isn’t enough to take care of nutrient requirements of the students. The letter mentioned the rise in prices of most food products ever since the Covid-19 pandemic has to be taken into account before releasing the stipend for students. The letter also requested for the hostels to be expanded in light of the admission of students also increasing. Computer lab facilities and WiFi connectivity in hostels were also sought.
