Surat and Bengaluru, leading cities in used water management

Surat and Bengaluru scored 3.32 and 3.23 out of 5 respectively

Assessment was based on 27 indicators covering 25 parameters

According to a report released by the think tank Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW), Surat and Bengaluru have emerged as the leading cities in used water management. This announcement comes amidst Bengaluru’s ongoing severe water crisis.

Scoring 3.32 and 3.23 out of 5 respectively on a composite index derived from the study’s findings, Surat and Bengaluru outperformed other cities. None of the other cities scored above 3, with 47 cities scoring above 2.25 and an additional 151 falling between 1.5 and 2.25.

The assessment was based on 27 indicators covering 25 parameters across five key themes: finance, infrastructure, efficiency, governance, and data and information. The research focused on ten states, including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, and West Bengal, which have adopted policies for reusing treated household sewage.

The report utilized the latest national-level sewage inventory data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in 2021, along with other governmental and non-governmental sources.

Given the increasing urban water demand and declining groundwater levels, the CEEW study emphasized the need for urban local bodies (ULBs) across the nation to enhance the treatment and reuse of used water for purposes such as horticulture and industrial activities.

Karnataka and Haryana were highlighted for implementing comprehensive graded action plans for used water treatment and reuse, as evidenced by their thematic scores and the distribution of ULBs across award categories on the MUWM (Municipal Used Water Management) Index, as noted in the study.
