Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, has courted controversy with his remarks about the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, suggesting that members of the "upper caste" should handle the portfolio for genuine progress in tribal welfare. Speaking at a BJP election campaign meeting, Gopi argued that appointing leaders from outside the tribal community, particularly from "upper castes," would lead to significant change in the ministry.

The actor-turned-politician's comments have sparked widespread condemnation, especially from the minority community. He suggested that a Brahmin or a Naidu should take charge of the ministry, claiming this would bring about real change for tribal welfare. Gopi also expressed his personal interest in overseeing the ministry, revealing that he had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the portfolio, though he acknowledged the existing precedents in portfolio allocation.
His remarks have been strongly criticized, particularly in Kerala. Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary Benoy Viswam called Gopi a "piper of the chaturvarna" (caste system) and demanded his removal from the Union ministry. Currently, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs is headed by BJP leader Jual Oram, a prominent tribal leader from Odisha.
The controversy highlights the ongoing debates over caste representation in Indian politics.
