1220 patients were surveyed for a study

The fatalities among those aged 60-80 was 20%

loss of appetite and fatigue were observed in 20% of the patients

A study by the Tamil Nadu Health Department has indicated that among patients who recovered from the Covid-19 virus between March 2022 and July 2023, 6% died thereafter. The effect was however less marked among those aged below 40 with less than 1% fatalities reported. The fatalities among those aged 60-80 had stretched up to 20%. 1220 patients were surveyed for the study. “Nearly half of cancer, cardiac failure and avascular necrosis of femur (temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the thigh bone) cases among the study group were reported after Covid-19 infection,” Director of Public Health T S Selvavinayagam stated.

Other patterns had also emerged among patients. Covid-19 symptoms such as loss of appetite and fatigue were observed in at least 20% of the patients. “Hospitalisation, oxygen requirement, lung involvement, ventilation requirement and comorbidities played a significant role in persistent Covid syndrome,” Dr Sudarshani Subramanium of the Madras Medical College and an author of the stated. This had directed attention towards the need for a post-covid care strategy. “We must now plan targeted interventions for individuals with severe Covid-19, pre-existing comorbidities and specific post-Covid complications,” said joint director of public health (epidemic) Dr P Sampath.
