India to introduce network-based caller ID to curb spam and fraud calls

India is all set to roll out a nationwide network-based caller ID system called CNAP. The feature will display the caller’s registered name before you answer, helping users avoid spam and fraud calls on 4G and 5G networks.

  • CNAP will display real names of callers before call pickup
  • Available on 4G and 5G networks only
  • Aims to curb spam, fraud, and fake caller identities

A new caller identification system, CNAP, will soon reveal the real name of the caller before you even pick up, helping curb spam and scam calls across India.

In a major move to tackle spam and scam calls, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are jointly implementing a new network-level caller ID system across the country.

The system, called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), will display the real name of the caller as registered with the telecom operator. This means before answering a call, the receiver will see the caller’s verified name, not just the number.

Why This Matters

Unwanted, fraudulent, and spam calls have become a major nuisance for millions of mobile users. CNAP aims to bring transparency and security by ensuring that every incoming call shows the actual name used while purchasing the SIM card. This move will significantly reduce fake identities and scam attempts.

How CNAP Works

•    The CNAP service will operate directly at the network level, not through third-party apps.
•    When a call is made, the caller’s registered name and number will appear on the receiver’s screen instantly.
•    The name displayed will match the one provided during SIM registration.
•    The service will be available only on 4G and 5G networks due to technical limitations. It will not function on 2G networks.

This marks the first time India is taking such a major initiative to protect users from spam and fraud. It puts the country in line with global telecom standards for verified calling systems.

With CNAP, mobile users will finally have the ability to identify unknown callers with confidence, and avoid falling prey to scams that often exploit anonymity.
