Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu signed a “military assistance” deal with China. Mohamed has still remained firm with his insistence of removal of Indian army staff stationed in Maldives. 88 Indian Army personnel are in charge of operating three aviation platforms in Maldives. These stations provide services pertaining to medical evacuation and humanitarian evacuation.

On February 29th 2024, a civilian group was sent to replace the military personnel in one of the three platforms. This was a result of a meeting in Delhi in which the decision to let 3 civilian groups operate these stations was taken. The deadline of May 10th has been given for the evacuation of the Indian army. The first phase of this evacuation is expected to happen before March 10th. “That these people [Indian military] are not departing, that they are returning after changing their uniforms into civilian clothing. We must not indulge such thoughts that instil doubts in our hearts and spread lies. There will be no Indian troops in the country come May 10. Not in uniform and not in civilian clothing. The Indian military will not be residing in this country in any form of clothing. I state this with confidence,” Mohamed said as per Edition.mv.
