India played Pakistan in the World Cup 1996 quarterfinals
Incident involving Prasad, Sohail still fresh in every cricket fan's mind
Indian won the match convincingly
It was on this day, 28 years ago, that India took on Pakistan in a humdinger of a match at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. It was the quarterfinals of the World Cup 1996.
Though India won the match comfortably, it was the incident in which former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad and Pakistan batsman Aamer Sohail were involved that caught everyone’s attention.
Interestingly, in one of the overs, Sohail hit Prasad to the boundary. Later, he gave him a stare and warned him that he would dispatch such loose balls.
Big embarrassment for Sohail!
But it was a big embarrassment for Sohail as Prasad dismissed him in the very next ball, exacting sweet revenge!
Batting first, India scored a challenging 287/8, propelled by a magnificent 93 by opener Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Chasing the total, Pakistan started robustly, with an opening partnership of 84 for the first wicket.
But going on, Indian bowlers were too good for the Pakistani batsmen as they eventually folded up at 248/9, handing India, a victory by 39 runs.
Though India won the match and graduated to the semifinal, they did not win that match.
The World Cup, however, was won by Sri Lanka.
