Ramdev tenders unconditional apology to top court
, Top court in no mood to admit Ramdev's apology
, The issue relates to 'misleading' ads
Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has faced stern criticism from the Supreme Court for flouting its directives regarding misleading advertisements of Patanjali’s medicinal products.
Though he offered an unconditional apology in court, both Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved managing director Acharya Balkrishna were instructed to personally appear before the Supreme Court in the contempt proceedings linked to the misleading advertisements case.
And even as they apologised, the court dismissed them as mere “lip service,” asserting that Patanjali owed an apology to the entire nation for their deceptive claims.
The court rebuked the Centre as well, questioning why it remained passive while Patanjali propagated misinformation, particularly regarding Covid remedies in allopathy.
A last opportunity
Granting a “last opportunity,” the Supreme Court directed Ramdev and Balkrishna to submit fresh affidavits within a week. Additionally, the court warned them of potential perjury charges, highlighting that documents submitted with Patanjali’s affidavit were evidently fabricated.
Supreme Court lambats Yoga Guru
Previously, the Supreme Court had admonished Patanjali for failing to respond to court notices, leading to the initiation of contempt proceedings. Despite assurances to cease false advertising, Patanjali continued to publish misleading advertisements, prompting the court to intervene and instruct the cessation of such promotions under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.
