VIP perks for inmates at Bengaluru’s central jail trigger investigation

Videos show Bengaluru jail inmates enjoying VIP perks like phones and TVs. Probe launched; officials promise strict action over security lapses and staff negligence

Alarming footage has emerged from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru, revealing high-profile inmates enjoying unauthorized luxuries. The videos show several notorious prisoners using smartphones, watching television, and engaging in activities that violate prison regulations.

Among those featured is serial offender Umesh Reddy, seen operating two mobile phones and watching an item song while on a call. Gold smuggling accused Tarun Raju appears to be cooking and using a phone inside the jail. Juhad Hameed Shakeel, linked to ISIS, is reportedly seen with electronic gadgets, raising serious concerns about security breaches.

The footage also highlights unequal treatment within the prison. Kannada actor Darshan was allegedly denied basic amenities, while other inmates seemed to enjoy VIP privileges. Despite the presence of mobile signal jammers, inmates reportedly accessed uninterrupted networks, suggesting possible internal collusion.

In response, Additional Inspector General P V Anand Reddy visited the facility and initiated an inquiry. Preliminary findings suggest the videos may date back to 2023. Authorities are now investigating how the devices entered the prison, how the footage was recorded, and who circulated it.

Officials have assured strict disciplinary action against both inmates and negligent staff. The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny of corruption and oversight failures in Bengaluru’s central jail, prompting calls for tighter surveillance and reforms to restore integrity in the prison system.
