A Virginia woman’s disappointment over receiving the wrong lottery ticket quickly turned into a life-changing moment when she won $2 million in a scratch-off game. Kelly Lindsay, a resident of Carrollton, had asked for a specific ticket at a local store but was mistakenly given a Money Blitz scratch-off instead.

Initially frustrated by the error, Lindsay scratched the ticket while still in the parking lot—only to discover she had won the top prize of $2 million. Her frustration quickly faded as she realized her unexpected fortune.

Lindsay opted for a one-time lump sum payment of $1.25 million after taxes. The Virginia Lottery revealed that her odds of winning the grand prize were one in 1,142,400, and one more winning ticket remains unclaimed. The overall odds of winning any prize in the Money Blitz game are one in 3.29.

She purchased the lucky ticket at the Race Way Carrollton gas station on Carrollton Boulevard. Her home county, Isle of Wight, benefited from over $3.7 million in state lottery funds last year for K-12 education. The Virginia Lottery, which contributes all profits to public schools, raised over $934 million last year, funding about 10% of the state’s education budget.

Lindsay was seen celebrating her win, holding a giant check and her lucky ticket, smiling at her unexpected stroke of luck.
