Amidst a severe water scarcity gripping the capital city of Karnataka, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), a government body, has taken strict measures against individuals found wasting water, resulting in fines imposed on 407 offenders and the collection of over ₹20 lakh.
BWSSB officials have been cracking down on residents misusing potable water for activities like vehicle washing and gardening. As of April 9, the board has fined 407 individuals, amassing ₹20.3 lakh from these violations. Vigilant residents have been reporting instances of water misuse, facilitating the board's efforts in catching offenders over the past month.
Out of the 407 cases, 90% involved using drinking water for vehicle cleaning, while the remaining 10% were related to gardening. Violators have been warned that repeated offenses will incur an additional ₹500 on top of the original ₹5,000 fine.
BWSSB has prohibited the use of potable water for various purposes, including swimming pools, car washing, gardening, construction, and maintenance.
