Water scarcity is escalating into a critical concern for hotels in Bengaluru, sparking alarm within the Bengaluru Hotels Association.

Insufficient water storage infrastructure in some establishments is aggravating the issue, forcing a temporary shutdown of these hotels. The crisis is deepening across the city, compelling hoteliers to procure water from tankers at inflated rates. This dependency on tanker water not only strains their finances but also underscores the urgency for municipal authorities such as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to intervene promptly.

Hotel owners are urging authorities concerned to address the situation with urgency, as the viability of their businesses hangs in the balance.

The looming threat of escalating meal and snack prices reflects the harsh reality of mitigating rising costs associated with acquiring water from tankers. Such price hikes could potentially deter patrons and further impact the already struggling hospitality sector.

Virendra Kamat, Bengaluru Hotels Association secretary, speaking to NewsFirst said, “Most borewells within hotels in Bengaluru have dried up resulting in water scarcity which in turn has pushed some hotels to close them temporarily. Despite government fixing tanker water prices, we are not getting water to run our hotels on time. We are being forced to procure water through tankers at spiraling prices.”

The situation not only highlights the immediate challenges faced by hotels but also underscores broader issues concerning water management and conservation in Bengaluru.

Sustainable solutions must be sought to alleviate the water stress faced by businesses and residents alike. Collaborative efforts between stakeholders, including government bodies, businesses, and civil society, are imperative to navigate through this crisis and ensure the long-term resilience of Bengaluru’s water resources.
