The collision of a goods train with the Kanchenjunga Express in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal resulted in the latter getting derailed. This is reported to have resulted in 15 deaths and more than 60 people getting injured. These are initial figures and are expected to increase with the rescue operations gaining pace. “Unfortunate accident in the NFR (Northeast Frontier Railway) zone. Rescue operations going on at war footing. Railways, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are working in close coordination. The injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached the site,” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishanav stated on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter).

Various political leaders such as the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their condolences to the family members of the deceased. Rs 2 lakh is reported to have been promised as way of ex-gratia in this regard. “The railway accident in West Bengal is saddening. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to officials and took stock of the situation. Rescue operations are underway to assist the affected. The Railways Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw Ji is on the way to the site of the mishap as well,” Modi remarked.
