Iran launches massive attack on Israel
Israel employs Iron Dome technology to thwart
It plays a critical role in defending Israel
Following a missile barrage launched by Iran on Tuesday, Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system played a critical role in intercepting the attack. The assault, which Iran claimed was in retaliation for the killing of Tehran-backed militant leaders, was largely neutralized by Israel’s robust aerial defenses. Israel’s military chief, Herzi Halevi, credited the Iron Dome for significantly blunting the missile strike, highlighting its vital role in safeguarding the nation.

Since becoming operational in 2011, the Iron Dome has intercepted thousands of rockets, primarily fired from Gaza and Lebanon, with an interception success rate of around 90%. The system, developed by Israel with later assistance from the United States, is designed to defend against short-range rockets up to 70 kilometers (43 miles).
Each Iron Dome battery includes a radar detection system, a computer to calculate rocket trajectories, and a launcher that fires interceptors if the incoming missile poses a threat to populated or strategic areas. This system complements other missile defenses like the Arrow, which counters ballistic missiles, and David’s Sling, for medium-range threats.
Though costly, with each interceptor priced between $40,000 and $50,000, the Iron Dome remains a cornerstone of Israel’s defense strategy, providing a vital shield against frequent missile threats in the region.
