In a major effort to curb misuse, WhatsApp banned approximately 71 lakh Indian accounts in April 2024. The Meta-owned messaging platform's latest India Monthly Report reveals that from April 1 to April 30, a total of 7,182,000 accounts were banned, with 1,302,000 of these being proactively banned before any user reports were filed.
This proactive stance is part of WhatsApp's broader strategy to prevent abuse. By utilizing advanced machine learning and data analytics, the platform can identify and mitigate suspicious behavior patterns indicative of potential misuse, enhancing user safety and trust.
During April 2024, WhatsApp received 10,554 user reports on various issues, including account support, ban appeals, product support, and safety concerns. However, only six accounts were actioned based on these reports, underscoring the stringent criteria WhatsApp employs for taking action against reported accounts.
These bans are in line with WhatsApp's compliance with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These rules require the publication of compliance reports detailing the actions taken in response to user grievances and violations of the law.
The June 2024 report highlights WhatsApp's rigorous measures against harmful behavior, demonstrating the platform's commitment to maintaining a secure and reliable environment for its users in India by leveraging both user complaints and sophisticated in-house detection mechanisms.
