Bengaluru has now claimed the top spot among Indian cities with the highest number of private cars, surpassing the national capital, New Delhi, according to a report. The Silicon Valley of India, notorious for its frequent traffic congestions, hosts approximately 23 lakh private cars.

Traditionally, Delhi held the record for the highest number of private vehicles. However, in 2023, the city witnessed a significant decline in private vehicle numbers following a directive from the Delhi Transport Department. The order mandated the scrapping and deregistration of old vehicles. As of March 2023, Delhi had a total of 79.5 lakh vehicles, with 20.7 lakh classified as private vehicles. Bengaluru outpaced the national capital, boasting 23.1 lakh private vehicles.

In 2022, Bengaluru secured the second position in the global ranking of most congested cities, according to geolocation technology specialist TomTom. The city center experienced a travel time of 29 minutes and 9 seconds for covering a distance of 10 km. London claimed the first position with an average travel time of 36 minutes and 20 seconds for a 6.2-mile (10 km) journey in the city center in 2022. The subsequent positions were secured by Dublin in Ireland, the Japanese town of Sapporo, and Milan in Italy.

Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, had previously highlighted the substantial number of vehicles as a primary cause for road damage.
