A study throws more serious dangers on the issue

A recent study published in the New York Post highlights a concerning correlation between texting while driving and psychopathic behavior. The research, conducted in Germany and based on interviews with approximately 1,000 drivers, reveals that a significant percentage admitted to engaging in problematic smartphone usage while behind the wheel.

The study found that over 61 percent of participants acknowledged the “problematic” usage of their gadgets while driving, with problematic smartphone users being associated with antisocial behavior, fear of missing out, and traits associated with the “dark triad” – namely psychopathy, machismo, and narcissism.

Researchers emphasize that problematic smartphone use (PSU) is a key predictor of these undesirable personality traits and behaviors, which have also been linked to drivers of deliberately noisy cars. The findings suggest that addressing PSU should be a priority in public safety interventions, driving training, and court-mandated assessments of driver fitness.

Moreover, the study proposes strategies to mitigate cell phone usage while driving, advocating for interventions aimed at reducing PSU in everyday life. By indirectly decreasing the likelihood of phone use on the road, these measures aim to prevent accidents and fatal crashes, underscoring the importance of addressing this dangerous driving behavior.
