BMRCL new rule concerning prolonged stays at metro stations

Unaware of time limit, metro users are incurring fine of Rs 50 for overstaying

Authorities are urged to address communication gap and ensure transparency

Bengaluru’s metro system, hailed for its efficiency and convenience, has found itself embroiled in a series of controversies in recent days, with the latest sparking heated debate among passengers and authorities alike.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has introduced a new rule concerning prolonged stays at metro stations, which not many commuters are aware of. This rule has sparked uproar among passengers, adding to many grievances including disrespectful behavior towards workers, harassment of women, and disparaging remarks against farmers.

The latest source of contention stems from the imposition of fines on passengers who linger too long at stations. The installation of charging points was intended to enhance commuter experience, yet it inadvertently led to an altercation between a passenger and metro staff. The passenger, unaware of the time limit, incurred a fine of 50 rupees for overstaying.

Frustration mounts as passengers argue that the 25-minute time limit for station stays is inadequately communicated, leading to unjust penalties. Incidents of fines being levied due to unforeseen circumstances, such as unfavourable weather or station congestion, have further fueled discontent.

While the BMRCL aims to discourage unnecessary loitering, the lack of awareness and clarity surrounding the new regulation has sparked unnecessary conflict. Authorities are urged to address the communication gap and ensure transparency to alleviate tensions and restore confidence in the metro system.
