Citizens file objections to felling of trees with K-RIDE and BBMP

Objections to be addressed in a public consultation meeting on June 14

Hundreds of citizens of Bengaluru have filed objections with the Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company Limited (K-RIDE) and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) concerning the proposed felling of thousands of trees for the Bengaluru-Suburban Rail Project (BSRP).

These objections, facilitated by a couple of NGOs highlight concerns over the ecological impact of the 148-kilometre project and suggest alternatives to minimize damage to the city’s green cover. Some of these objections will be addressed in a public consultation meeting on June 14.

While acknowledging the benefits of the project in reducing private vehicle use and promoting sustainable mobility, citizens stress the significant ecological costs. Trees play a crucial role in mitigating the urban heat island effect, especially amid evident global warming consequences. Concerns have also been raised regarding adherence to the Karnataka Tree Preservation Act of 1976, urging K-RIDE to make the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Social Impact Assessment reports public and involve BBMP’s forest department in joint public consultations.

Environment experts emphasized the need to consider the climate crisis and propose more sustainable alternatives. They argue that the number of trees felled could be significantly reduced, citing recent extreme climate events in Bengaluru as a critical reason to protect the city’s ecological balance while supporting the BSRP.
