IPS officer Alok Kumar promoted as DGP of Prisons; govt addresses KAT plea, B. Dayanand moved to Police Training School

The state government has promoted senior IPS officer Alok Kumar, a 1994batch officer, to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP). An official order issued on Wednesday confirmed his appointment as the head of the Prisons Department.

Kumar, who previously served as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), takes over from B. Dayanand. Dayanand has been transferred to the Police Training School as ADGP. The reshuffle marks a significant step in the state’s police administration, with Kumar now entrusted with overseeing prison management and reforms.

The promotion comes after Kumar had approached the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT), alleging that his elevation was being overlooked. In his petition, he pointed out that fellow officers Arun Chakravarthy and Umesh Kumar had been promoted ahead of him. The tribunal case highlighted concerns over fairness in promotions within the police department.

With the latest order, the government has addressed Kumar’s grievance, placing him in charge of a crucial department that plays a central role in maintaining law and order through effective prison administration.

Officials say Kumar’s experience and seniority will be valuable in strengthening prison reforms, improving facilities, and ensuring transparency in operations. His appointment is seen as both a recognition of his service and a move to stabilize leadership in the department.
