Routine inspection at Parappana Agrahara jail exposes warden carrying banned narcotics; police register criminal case
In a major breach of prison protocol, a warden at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison has been arrested after officials found cigarettes and banned narcotic material in his possession during a routine inspection. The arrested official has been identified as Rahul Patil, who has been serving in the Karnataka prison department since 2018.
According to the complaint filed by Prison Superintendent Paramesh, the incident took place on the evening of December 4, when staff were being checked near the prison entry point. During the inspection, officers found a cigarette packet and 60 grams of prohibited thin paper-type narcotic substance in Patil’s possession.

Senior jail authorities were immediately informed, following which the matter was escalated to the police. A criminal case has now been registered at the Parappana Agrahara Police Station, and Patil was taken into custody.
Rahul Patil had earlier served at the Belagavi prison before being transferred to Parappana Agrahara in July this year. What began as a regular inspection has now resulted in the warden becoming an accused in the very jail he once worked in.

Officials say Patil will remain in custody until he secures bail, effectively making him an inmate of the same prison due to his own actions.
The investigation is underway to determine whether Patil was supplying the materials inside the prison or was in possession for personal use, officials added.
