Five-kilometre Iblur-Carmelaram stretch gets fresh asphalt; task force proposes 8-km skywalk to support the area’s rapid shift into a tech hub.
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has taken up a major upgrade of Sarjapur Road, starting with the asphalting of a five-kilometre stretch between Iblur and the Carmelaram railway overbridge. The corridor, once known mainly as a link between residential pockets and the Outer Ring Road’s tech belt, has now grown into a busy tech hub of its own, driving up traffic far beyond original projections.

Data from the Mahadevapura Task Force shows that the stretch currently handles nearly three times the load it was designed to accommodate. Peak hours see even heavier movement as thousands of commuters head toward large office clusters, new tech parks and rapidly expanding residential zones.
To prepare for future demand, the task force has suggested a long-term mobility solution: an 8-km continuous skywalk built below the proposed metro viaduct coming up under Phase 3A. Officials believe such a pedestrian corridor, funded either by IT companies or the Outer Ring Road Companies’ Association (ORRCA), could allow thousands of employees living nearby to walk to work safely and reduce pressure on road traffic.'

The current asphalting work is part of a broader plan to strengthen major routes in the Mahadevapura region, where rapid development has outpaced road capacity. Fresh surfacing is expected to improve ride quality and provide more durable relief compared to earlier patchwork repairs.
