Bengaluru’s Clean Air Push Gets a ₹147-Crore Boost

Bengaluru is set for a fresh wave of green and mobility upgrades as the Karnataka government has approved a ₹147.40-crore action plan under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) for 2023–24. The plan, initially prepared by the now-dissolved BBMP and recently revised, aims to curb air pollution and accelerate eco-friendly urban development.

The funding will be shared by Bescom, BMTC, BSWML, the Horticulture Department, and the Climate Action Cell, now part of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). Authorities have been directed to implement the works quickly after acknowledging delays in earlier phases.

Key Projects in the Revised Plan

•    New Green Spaces: ₹30 crore allocated to develop parks in Byatarayanapura, Mahadevapura, Yeshwanthpur, Bommanahalli, and Yelahanka.
•    Landfill Closure: BSWML gets ₹25 crore for the scientific closure of the Bagalur landfill, tackling air pollution and fire risks.
•    Traffic & Footpath Upgrades: ₹30.5 crore for improving major junctions in Gandhinagar, Hebbal, Malleswaram, and Pulakeshinagar, plus footpath works near Iblur metro, Dinnur Main Road, and Shampura Main Road.
•    EV Charging Infra: Bescom to use ₹21.90 crore for public EV stations; BMTC to spend ₹10 crore to support its electric bus fleet.
•    Climate Action: ₹30 crore earmarked for green cover and footpath enhancement in HSR Layout, Agara Lake, Sarakki, Hennur-Kacharakanahalli Lake, and HBR Layout.

Despite being one of the most underserved constituencies in terms of green space, KR Puram did not feature in the park development list—an omission likely to raise questions.

With Bengaluru already having received significant NCAP funds — ₹115.50 crore (2023–24), ₹122.25 crore (2024–25), and ₹124.50 crore (2025–26) — this latest approval signals the government’s intent to step up its clean air mission for India’s tech hub.
