Bengaluru-Hyderabad bullet train moves forward as soil testing begins

Work on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad bullet train corridor has begun with soil testing along the 263 km route. The high-speed train, planned to run at 320 km/h, will reduce the current 8-hour journey to just 2 hours.

  • Soil testing underway for the 263 km high-speed corridor
  • Travel time to drop from 8 hours to 2 hours
  • Train to run at 320 km/h between Kurnool and Bengaluru

Early groundwork starts on the high-speed rail corridor expected to cut Bengaluru-Hyderabad travel time from 8 hours to just 2 hours.

India’s plans to expand its high-speed rail network have taken a significant step forward in the South, with soil testing now underway for the proposed Bengaluru-Hyderabad bullet train corridor. This marks the beginning of the preliminary groundwork for what is expected to become one of the country’s most important high-speed rail routes.

Authorities have already started collecting soil samples across a 263-kilometre stretch for geotechnical studies and initial surveys. These tests are crucial for assessing ground conditions before finalising construction plans for the dedicated bullet train track.

The corridor will enable trains to run at speeds of up to 320 km/h, particularly along the section between Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh and Bengaluru. At this speed, the travel time from Kurnool to Bengaluru is expected to be around 1 hour and 20 minutes, sharply reducing the current long journey by conventional rail.

For the full Bengaluru-Hyderabad stretch, between Yeshwantpur in Bengaluru and Kachiguda in Hyderabad , covering 620 kilometres, the high-speed service is projected to bring down travel time from nearly 8 hours to just 2 hours. This dramatic reduction is set to transform inter-city movement, making same-day business and leisure travel far more convenient.

The project comes at a time when India is already advancing work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train line. According to the railways, the Surat-Bilimora section of that corridor is scheduled to become operational by December 2027, marking the country’s first functioning bullet train route.

With soil testing now in progress for the Bengaluru-Hyderabad corridor, the project has officially moved from planning to preliminary execution. Once completed, the high-speed link is expected to significantly boost connectivity, reduce travel time, and strengthen economic ties between the two major southern metros.
