A lavish ₹40 lakh wedding, relentless dowry demands, alleged harassment from the first week of marriage, a young bride’s suicide, and a shocking counter-tragedy as the accused husband dies by suicide in Nagpur.

In a disturbing case that highlights the continuing menace of dowry harassment, a newly married woman, Ganavi, died by suicide within weeks of her wedding in Bengaluru, allegedly driven by sustained cruelty and financial demands from her husband and in-laws. The case has since taken a dramatic turn with her husband Suraj also dying by suicide in Nagpur, while his mother is battling for life after an alleged suicide attempt.

Ganavi, a B.Com graduate, was married through an arranged marriage to Suraj. Her father, Shashi Kumar, had spent nearly ₹40 lakh on the wedding and hosted a grand reception. Despite this, Ganavi allegedly began facing dowry harassment within a week of marriage. According to the complaint filed by her parents, Suraj and his family demanded additional dowry and warned that Ganavi would not be allowed to live with them unless their demands were met.

The couple travelled to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon soon after marriage. However, the trip reportedly turned traumatic. Suraj allegedly continued to obsess over dowry even during the honeymoon, refusing to maintain physical intimacy and insisting that his “first demand” must be fulfilled before any marital relationship. Ganavi allegedly fell ill with fever during the trip and was denied proper food, water, and care. Following repeated arguments, the couple returned to Bengaluru midway through the honeymoon.

After their return, disputes escalated further. Suraj allegedly assaulted Ganavi and continued to pressure her for dowry, demanding six sets of gold jewellery and an Innova car. When Shashi Kumar approached Suraj’s family requesting that his daughter be accepted back into the marital home, he and Ganavi were allegedly insulted and told to leave immediately.

Deeply distressed by the humiliation faced by her father and the continued cruelty, Ganavi returned to her parental home at B. Channasandra under the Ramamurthy Nagar police station limits. On Monday, she allegedly consumed poison at home. Family members rushed her to a nearby private hospital, but doctors later declared her brain dead and confirmed her death.

Shashi Kumar tried to inform Suraj about the incident, but Suraj allegedly switched off his phone and went incommunicado. Based on the parents’ complaint, Ramamurthy Nagar police registered a case against Suraj, his mother Jayanti, and his brother Sanjay under charges related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Police teams visited Suraj’s residence in Vidyaranyapura as part of the investigation.

The complaint details Suraj’s alleged greed for money, including claims that he portrayed himself as a high-profile individual owning a resort. Ganavi’s family also raised serious questions over Suraj’s insistence on IVF, alleging that he married Ganavi despite knowing he wanted assisted reproduction.

Scenes of grief unfolded outside Columbia Asia Hospital, where Ganavi’s family broke down, demanding justice.

In a shocking development after Ganavi’s death and the registration of the case, Suraj, his mother Jayanti, and brother Sanjay reportedly travelled to Nagpur. There, Suraj allegedly died by suicide. Jayanti is said to have attempted suicide and is currently undergoing treatment in a Nagpur hospital. The family suspects that public humiliation, legal action, and allegations made after Ganavi’s death may have led to the extreme step.

The case continues to be investigated as multiple lives have been lost in a tragedy rooted in dowry greed, exposing the dark reality behind lavish weddings and social pretence.
