Bengaluru North Corporation seeks ₹1,210 cr grant from State Finance Commission for major civic works

Bengaluru North City Corporation has requested ₹1,210 crore from the State Finance Commission for civic development. The demand includes roads, stormwater drains, public toilets, Indira Canteens, animal welfare and office infrastructure.

During consultations with the Fifth State Finance Commission, the Bengaluru North City Corporation placed a detailed funding demand covering roads, stormwater drains, sanitation, animal welfare and public infrastructure.

The Bengaluru North City Corporation has placed a major funding proposal before the Fifth State Finance Commission, seeking a total grant of ₹1,210 crore to support key civic and infrastructure projects in the coming financial year.

The demand was presented during a consultation meeting held on Tuesday between the Commission and officials of the North City Corporation. During the discussions, the corporation urged the Commission to allocate at least ₹1,000 crore in the next financial year to meet growing urban infrastructure needs.

According to officials, the proposed funds are essential to carry out multiple development works across the corporation’s jurisdiction, addressing long-pending civic challenges related to drainage, roads, sanitation and public services.

A significant portion of the demand, ₹500 crore, has been earmarked for the construction of new stormwater drains and the repair of existing major drains, aimed at reducing flooding during monsoon seasons. Another ₹500 crore has been sought for road-related works, including new road construction, widening of existing roads and urgent repairs to improve connectivity and traffic flow.

The corporation has also requested ₹75 crore for the construction of public toilets around parks and lakes, with a focus on improving sanitation facilities in public spaces.

In compliance with Supreme Court directives, ₹25 crore has been proposed for the relocation of street dogs, vaccination drives and the creation of proper shelter facilities to ensure animal welfare and public safety.

Additionally, ₹10 crore has been requested for the development and maintenance of Indira Canteens, which provide subsidised meals to urban residents. The corporation has also sought close to ₹100 crore for the construction and improvement of its main headquarters and zonal offices to strengthen administrative functioning.

The State Finance Commission has taken note of the detailed proposal and is expected to review the demands as part of its broader recommendations for urban local bodies across Karnataka.
