BIAL invites bids for automated people mover design; parallel feasibility study planned for ultra-luxury airport hotel
Switching between terminals at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is set to become faster and more convenient with the planned introduction of an automated people mover (APM). Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates the airport, has invited bids for design consultancy services for the project, with submissions open until Wednesday.
The proposed APM will be a driverless, rail-based transport system meant for short-distance and high-frequency passenger movement. Such systems are commonly used at major international airports, large campuses and theme parks. Depending on the final design, the APM may operate using monorail technology or rubber-tyred systems, enabling smooth and efficient inter-terminal travel.

Airports across the United States, China, Malaysia and Singapore already use similar driverless transit systems. At KIA, the APM was first announced in December 2023 as part of long-term infrastructure upgrades. Once the system becomes operational, Bengaluru airport will be the first in India to offer an automated inter-terminal transit facility. Currently, passengers are transported between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 using electric shuttle buses.
Alongside the APM project, BIAL’s subsidiary, Bangalore Airport Hotel Limited (BAHL), has initiated another development plan. BAHL has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to appoint consultants for a feasibility study on setting up an ultra-luxury hotel within the airport premises.
